Overview of psychotherapy

Psychotherapy can be invaluable for healing.

There are many approaches to psychotherapy: existential, cognitive, behavioral, psychoanalysis and hypnosis.

  • Existential psychotherapy focuses on the pursuit of meaning and inspiration in a person's life.

  • Cognitive therapy addresses how thoughts may cause mental distress such as anxiety or depression.

  • Behavior therapy involves relaxation methods to help a person heal difficulties such as public speaking; and also involves contracts to establish support for goals.

  • Psychoanalysis focuses on healing emotional wounds.

  • Hypnosis provides altered states of consciousness to help with relaxation, sleep, dream interpretation, personal insight, and creativity.

Psychotherapy sometimes focuses on just one approach but sometimes multiple approaches are integrated
